SLAKE Information Session Held in Sri Lanka

SLAKE successfully conducted two information sessions in Sri Lanka for the first time in December, 2019. The main goal of these sessions was to share the vision of SLAKE and to explore the gaps that could be filled through our organization via collaborative efforts between students, researchers and young professionals in the US and in Sri Lanka. The 1st session was carried out at the Asia Foundation in the capital city of Sri Lanka, Colombo. Attendees from various backgrounds took part including professors, graduate students, members of non-profit organizations and young entrepreneurs. The 2nd session was held in the hill country of Sri Lanka, Kandy at the faculty of engineering, University of Peradeniya. Many faculty members took part to share their valuable views and insights on taking SLAKE forward. Some of the ideas suggested as initiatives for SLAKE were;

  • Provide a platform for networking to help facilitate ‘warm introductions’ to those with similar professional interests
  • Support for graduate students to attend professional conferences or travel for skills training
  • Events for budding entrepreneurs to pitch ideas to potential stakeholders
  • Assistance with graduate school applications to U.S. schools (information on graduate programs and funding, introductions to SLAKE members in a  program of interest, reviewing admissions essays)
  • Support for academic publications or graduate student research reports (proof-reading by native English speakers, partial funding to support publication costs)
  • Create spaces where professionals doing similar work can brainstorm or discuss ideas
  • Forums for women in STEM-M
  • Increasing exposure for work in Sri Lanka

We were delighted to receive such positive feedback and enthusiasm and we would like thank everyone who took the time to participate. We will consider these suggestions and explore capabilities as we take SLAKE forward
